It was an exciting time at the VfB Stuttgart match against Swabian rival team FC Augsburg on the last Saturday of October 2022. Both the Home Team and the non-stop Red & White Wall crazy fans put on a show for the crowd. This is ‘football’ to much of the world, or ‘soccer’ to Americans, or ‘Fußball’ to Germans. VfB Stuttgart is ranked #16 out of 18 teams in the Bundesliga, and Augsburg is ranked #12. A good contest, game time at 15.30, and we had a sunny afternoon for it.
We bought our tickets online, an easy process, and also bought the red and white team scarves. These will come in handy during the long winter as well as for Game Day. We rode 2 city trains up to northeast Stuttgart, to the beautiful Mercedes-Benz Arena. Fan packed the trains, and quite a few were already starting pre-partying on the trains.
This event was one of the few things that has gone smoothly for us while living in Germany. 😜 Everything was organized, from entry, to buying refreshments, and finding our seats. Vendors selling water, sodas, beer, pretzels, and sausage sandwiches were busy, but the lines moved quickly. Our seats were fantastic, near mid-field, 5th row. We ordered these on-line as soon as they came open for sale, at €55 each. They were in direct sunlight for the first half, but a good spot to view the pitch, and also roomy seats, with room between seats. Luxurious!
The Match
The match was fun to watch, with great action and tricky plays. Possibly even more fun was the home end zone full of super fans, “Ultras”, the “Red and White Wall.” They put on a spectacular display throughout the match. In our decades of going to NCAA sporting events, NFL games, and the Olympics, we have never seen such imaginative, wonderfully choreographed, and energetic fans like this. They were Cheerleaders, Dance Team, and Band rolled into one.
The crowd was loud and happy, especially with the end result, VfB wins 2-1! It was very exciting, and everyone was ready to celebrate the win with us on the train rides back. A fun time at the VfB Stuttgart match, and nice to see all the happy fans.
