You’ve probably heard of Oktoberfest in Munich, but Stuttgart has its own version, and Volksfest is indeed a fun day out. The Cannstatter Volksfest is the largest festival in Germany, and includes rides, fried dough, gelato, and crafts stands, small outdoor beer gardens, and large beer tents that hold thousands of festive revelers. Volksfest 2023 runs from 22-September through 8-October.

After living in Germany for two years, we finally bought the proper outfits to wear to Volksfest, the traditional dirndl for Barbara, and lederhosen for Rob.

The Beer Tent
This year we had tickets in the Göckelesmaier tent, and had a fun day with friends. With the band playing everything from traditional German songs to “Country Roads,” the tent is full of dancing and singing. The drinks and foods inside the tent are cooked to perfection and presented photo-ready. We enjoyed delicious beers and wine spritzers, and a rotisserie chicken dinner.

A big thank you to everyone who works the festival: the servers, cooks, bartenders, the band, security, and management. This is a huge event to put together, and the hustle is amazing to see. They all work incredibly hard in order to make Volksfest a fun time. Watch them in action on Instagram or Facebook.

Surprisingly, we are making plans for next year's Volksfest. This is in case we are still living in Germany! And specifically in Stuttgart. We are likely here until next summer. And then ... we will see. Meanwhile, we remember to enjoy where we are while we are there.
