We spent 2 days in Budapest in early January, connecting with family and friends who were visiting from the US. A few years ago, we spent a week in Budapest and loved every minute of it, so were happy to have the chance to go back. We focused in on what we wanted to see and do, and once again had a wonderful time.

We like to stay on the Pest side for its many restaurants, Ruin Bars, and more activity than on the quieter Buda side of the river. On both of our visits, we lucked into the best Airbnb’s, fabulous apartment at super-reasonable prices.

Highlights for 2 days in Budapest
Budapest is a very picturesque city, with the Danube running through it. Below are some highlights of what a visitor should see in Budapest, but we also recommend also saving time to wander around to find charming street scenes.

On the Buda side of the river, visit Buda Castle, Matthias Church, and the fairylike towers of Fisherman’s Bastion.
Cross the Danube using the pedestrian walkway on the distinctive Chain Bridge, built by a Scotsman, completed in 1849. In good weather, casual café restaurants pop up along either side of the river.

On the Pest side is the gorgeous riverside Parliament Building with a moving memorial for Jewish people killed during World War II, “Shoes on the Danube Bank.”
From the river, walk up Andrássy utca to see St. Stephen’s Basilica, followed by the gorgeous Opera House. Further along is another must-visit: the Széchenyi Thermal Baths, a wonderful place to spend some time relaxing.

The Central Hall, a large indoor market, is one of our favorite markets in Europe.

Food and Fun
A must-visit is the Ruin Bars, cool, friendly settings in what were originally abandoned buildings and courtyards. A fun experience to relax in, have a drink, and feel that you’ve stepped into another world and time.

Despite the cold and rain during our 2 days in Budapest, café restaurants were in full swing, with outdoor heaters and awnings. Sitting outside to eat is a great feeling of being on vacation.

We found both an Irish and an English pub.

Budapest is a wonderful city to visit, with much to see and do, in a beautiful and friendly setting. Even with the rain, our 2 days in Budapest was so much fun.

Egészségedre!
