We enjoyed a family visit to Copenhagen over Easter weekend, meeting up with my sister and two nephews. One nephew, who is studying in Denmark for his Junior Semester Abroad, hosted us in his adopted country for a special and fun weekend. It really is amazing to spend time with family abroad.

The weather was much warmer, and the sky a lighter shade of grey than on our last trip to Copenhagen, in January 2023. There were also a lot more people out and about, enjoying the holiday weekend. Outdoor tables were set up everywhere, and with heat lamps and lap rugs, it was very pleasant to eat outside.

Touring Copenhagen
We explored the highlights of Copenhagen while spending lots of quality time together. The Kastellet Fortress and Rosenborg Castle, both from the 17th century, are favorite spots in Copenhagen for us. And of course everyone must see the Little Mermaid statue. We even found a lifelike mechanical Hans Christian Andersen, ready and willing to read to visitors in a souvenir shop where the author once lived.

Our nephew showed us around Copenhagen, visiting many of the quaint streets. Around every corner was another street full of beautiful architecture, café restaurants, and shops. We even found a Grain and Grapes Pub!

Nyhavn, the iconic canal of Copenhagen, is a must-visit. Harbor boat tours were full of visitors, which is another thing we didn’t see in January. We ate lunch at Hyttefadet in Nyhavn, and highly recommend their herring sampling plate – delicious!

The large and wonderful amusement park, Tivoli, was just opening for the season. Located right in the heart of Copenhagen, this is truly a cool experience, with super fun rides.

Our family visit to Copenhagen was full of fun and laughs. A Junior Semester Abroad is a fabulous opportunity for any student, and Copenhagen, although it’s not in Italy, seems like a very good location. Living abroad, for any length of time, is a life-changing experience.
