Each year, Rob’s company pays for a trip home for us, a good benefit for us expats in Germany, and we are just back from our USA visit of 2024. With 9 days at home, we drove 900 miles around Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina, and had priceless fun times with family and friends.
Family, friends, and food are our focus when we’re home, along with much shopping at Target and Walmart, and our constant wonder at the wide open spaces and bottomless cups of coffee.

We had a wonderful time, as always. The weather was amazing almost every day, cool and sunny, and we enjoyed seeing the fall foliage. As we drove on our four-state tour, we felt an overwhelming feeling of home.

Atlanta
We flew in and out of Atlanta, which gave us an opportunity to see friends in our favorite home town. We visited Georgia Tech’s campus on Homecoming weekend, and have to wonder if we were lucky for GT on Saturday against #4 Miami! However, on the following weekend, back in Atlanta for our return flight, a friend got us tickets to a men’s basketball team, which ended in a loss. We do miss our sports!

Foods of Home
Of course seeing family and friends is top of our agenda for our trip home, every time. But we also love the amazing variety of foods and flavors that we find in the US. My sister-in-law even made an entire early-Thanksgiving dinner for us! So thoughtful, since we haven’t had a proper Thanksgiving dinner in years.

Breakfast is one of our favorite meals to eat out in the US, and we found all the hash browns, grits, and biscuits that we could eat. The Waffle House is always a treat, we love the Big Breakfast at Fadó Irish Pub, and we found a new favorite spot in the Candler Park area of Atlanta, Augie’s Cafe Breakfast Bar.

Irish Pubs

While in Atlanta, we met up with long-time friends for a pub day at our favorite Irish Pub in Atlanta. 🍀

Top Travel Tip: If you’re ever traveling through the Amsterdam Airport (AMS), in terminal D is a great small pub called Murphy’s Bar. We recommend it!

The US is an amazing country, with wide open spaces, tons of cultural diversity, friendly people, and ultimate conveniences. It is always home to us, we love our visits, and look forward to eventually moving back full time.

We had a wonderful USA Visit in 2024.
