Wonderful Greece, home to a friendly, welcoming, happy people. Our travels in 2022 started with a long weekend trip to Athens in January. Walking around Athens is truly a stroll through history. As we walk through the city, we don’t have to look hard to find an ancient ruin. Ruins are just part of the scenery. We know the islands are a main draw in Greece, but we could have spent a whole week in and around Athens seeing the sights.

The Parthenon and other ruins sit on the Acropolis hill, providing amazing views. We could see the Acropolis lit up at night from the balcony of our Airbnb, a lovely sight.
We toured the Acropolis as soon as it opened in the morning, the perfect time to avoid the crowds. What a unique experience to walk through the remains of many old ruins, and see the Parthenon, from 447 B.C., a temple dedicated to Athena. Breathtaking scenes around every corner, and views all the way to the sea.

Tours from Athens
Visiting Delphi was our favorite outing among many wonderful sights of the weekend. In a rocky, green, mountainous area, Delphi is home to the remains of the temple of Apollo, and the Oracle who gives tricky predictions. We drove from Athens for about two hours through rolling hills and olive groves, and up the mountain to Delphi. We felt a special atmosphere as soon as we arrived. There is a deep silence over the whole area, even though many visitors were roaming around. We walked for hours through the ruins here, soaking in the special environment, the history, and the air of mystery.

We also visited the Temple of Poseidon, which sits on a peninsula jutting out into the Aegean Sea, built here to be visible to ships throughout the area. The tour ran at sunset for amazing views of sea, sky, and the ancient ruins.

Foods of Greece
The local food is one of our favorite parts of any country, but especially in Greece.
Café tables were available everywhere, perfect to sit outside and enjoy wonderful seafood dishes, wines, and the simple but equally delicious Souvlaki sandwiches.
The Greeks make a Souvlaki sandwich with a pita bread, either chicken or pork, onion, tomato, tzatziki, and fries. The fries are included right in the pita for pure deliciousness.

If you love history, you will certainly enjoy Athens. We greatly enjoyed this time in Greece, and now we can’t wait to get back and spend some time exploring the islands.
