Ludwigsburg, Germany holds an annual Pumpkin Festival each autumn, said to be the biggest pumpkin exhibition in the world. The festival is held on the extensive grounds of the Ludwigsburg Palace, and runs from September through early December. On weekends that we are not traveling, we love going to local festivals, especially with a unique theme. Our area hasn’t seen much sunshine this autumn, but Sunday’s forecast was cloudy with a chance of blue skies. We rode 2 city trains from Stuttgart to Ludwigsburg, where an easy walk through town brought us to the magnificent Palace.

The Festival chooses a different theme every year, ‘Rainforest’ is the theme for this year. Sculptures run from small to large, built with pumpkins. Who knew there were so many varieties of pumpkins, but there are over 600 varieties on display at the Festival. The creativity of the artists and details of the sculptures are impressive. We saw a crocodile, a parrot, an elephant, a fork-tongued lizard, a few toads, and much more.
In addition to the fun sculptures, delicious smells waft over the grounds. Food vendors and cafés sell all kinds of pumpkin-based foods, including muffins, fries, ravioli, cakes and cookies. Soup, jams, and even wine made with pumpkin were for sale. This festival is a real celebration of that beautiful gourd, the pumpkin.

Ludwigsburg Pumpkin Festival
The Ludwigsburg Pumpkin Festival is fun for the whole family, and especially for pumpkin lovers. The Palace grounds and gardens alone are outstanding to visit, while the pumpkins are an added bonus of fun. A lovely autumn outing, and we enjoyed some pumpkin soup for dinner.
