My time working with USA Boxing over 6+ years provided me with some great life memories. We traveled to international competitions in far-flung locations like Mongolia and Kazakhstan, locations that provided highlights in addition to the competitions. There were deep snows, finding the Genghis Khan Irish Pub, and a wonderful Thanksgiving meal that we had in India. International trips help build common ground with teams and as I often say, “bonds are built in battle.”
When I found out that the USA Boxing team would be near Berlin for a training camp, we made plans for a road trip. The German Olympic and Paralympic Training Center is in Kienbaum, about a 7-hour drive north of Stuttgart. The Training Center is in a peaceful area in the countryside, situated on a lake and surrounded by nature. The facilities are perfect for both undistracted training and recovery.
International Boxing Camp
This international camp included teams from Ireland, Germany, Finland, and Poland, as well as the USA. Our German hosts offered us generous hospitality, and we enjoyed catching up with coaches and athletes, and meeting the newer members of Team USA. We were there for a full day of test matches in the boxing gym, and I was happy to test out the dynamic auto-focus on my Nikon Z9.
Later, after a day of watching the test matches, and dinner with the team, we ended the night in the Coaches’ Lounge, catching up with coaches and support staff. The conversation revolved around the past competitions and common hardships and celebrations. It’s also great to hear all the plans for future competitions, camps, and travel, all the preparations that are involved in The Road to Paris 2024.
