We had the opportunity last weekend to spend a few days in the Alps of southern Bavaria. We were invited to a retreat, and so on Friday, we headed for a chalet-hotel in a ski town south of Munich. It was a scenic road trip with the roads remaining clear, while we rolled past snow-covered landscapes.

The Alps are impressive at any time, but most especially when they disappear behind clouds, haze, and fog, only to suddenly reappear, rugged and enormous.

The ski town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen is small and lovely, full of historic buildings decorated with beautiful murals and statues. The town was quite closed down during our visit, everyone seemed to be taking an April vacation.
We joined everyone else in town who wanted to eat out on a Saturday night at the Restaurant Pizzeria Renzo. The restaurant was packed, but efficient and lovely, and we had an excellent dinner of pizza and red wine.

On Sunday, we chose a different route to drive home, to see more scenic views. The border of Austria was close by, so we swung through more Alps before turning north to home.

It was a wonderful get-away weekend in the Alps, enjoying gorgeous scenery and meeting new friends.
